A tense two-hander, packed with black humour, in which King Henry VIII visits Sebastian Newdigate - an erstwhile friend and privy councillor, who has left the court to become a Carthusian monk. Finding himself unable to sign the Act of Supremacy, with which Henry seized authority over the Church, Newdigate has been imprisoned and chained to a pillar for fourteen days. Henry visits him – at first in disguise, and then revealing his identity.

The play was first performed in the crypt of Westminster Cathedral, and subsequently in locations across London. We took it to the Brighton Fringe in 2014, where it was awarded an Argos Angel for artistic excellence.

The Visitor

'The intensity and credibility of the conversation did not falter once and some judiciously- judged gallows humour proved a delight. This was never a stodgy history lesson and the issue of conflicting loyalties between social structure and a higher authority has worldwide relevance today.'

'Sharon Jennings has done a lot more than settle on a brilliant idea for her piece. She has an ear for dialogue and understanding of how male friendship works at time of stress.'

'Their conversation and debating was intelligent writing at its best, with outstanding performances to match….while the king’s rages truly terrified, they were leavened by the dry humour in the writing.’

BRIGHTON ARGUS, MAY 22, 2013

‘ A powerful and intimate two-hander that left this audience member thinking about the show days later. ….A beautifully written and  fascinating play which allows us to peer through the barred window on to a little known but intriguing aspect of Tudor history.’

AUDIENCE REVIEW, MAY 2013

‘A moving and artful exploration….A royal gem of a play.’
